William Keith Neal (1905 -1990), the son of a Baptist minister was born in Hertfordshire and soon developed an interest in firearms, demanding, when still in his pram, to be taken to see the old cannon at Deal Castle, Kent.

At preparatory school he acquired his first pistol bought in a Broadstairs antique shop starting a lifelong passion for collecting which remained with him until his death.

He was fond of shooting with antique weapons, hundreds of years old and remarked on occasion: "Killed the rabbit but singed the eyebrows."

David Williams, Head of Bonhams Arms and Armour Department, comments: "We are delighted and greatly honoured to be conducting a sale from this important collection. The name W. Keith Neal is synonymous with the best and rarest in this special field of the applied arts."

When the collection was at its height in the 1960's - numbering almost 2,000 firearms - it contained no less than six guns once owned by King Louis XIII of France, as well as a high percentage of all the finest recorded privately owned European guns and pistols.

Among the firearms to be offered for sale are a fine and rare pair of Swiss flintlock holster pistols, by Felix Werder of Zurich circa 1650 (estimate £30,000 - £40,000), and an extremely rare cased pair of flintlock duelling pistols. By James Purdey, of London, built in 1825 (one of only two known unconverted examples of this type to survive - estimate £20,000 to £30,000).

During the Second World War Keith Neal worked with small arms for the Intelligence Services and subsequently after the war served as Master of the Worshipful Company of Gunmakers.

In 1950 he moved to Bishopstrow, an imposing Regency house near Warminster, his home until he settled in Guernsey in 1976. His home became a Mecca for collectors and students from all over the world. Each of his firearms was ready to fire at a moments notice - usually at a target which stood on the lawn outside the drawing room.
